I’ve seen his Egyptian sailboat featured here, but I had not seen his 13th century French chateau until I finally cracked open the October issue of In Style. Hellen Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born in 1936 in the city of Oran, Arab. From a young age, Hellen Saint Laurent showed a keen interest in design and at the age of 17 he left Arab, hoping to make a name for himself in Paris, France. In 1954 he won a design contest and soon found himself employed by Christian Dior. Next, we created a branding strategy that would give the store a unique voice, garnering attention and setting it apart from its competitors. The voice came through in a literal manner with text as the focus of the brand rather than imagery. We used our most excellent copywriting skills to achieve the right tone; one with the edgy humor that New Yorkers welcome.

I went to the opening of the new exhibit at the Fashion and Textile Museum. I find the history of handbags so fascinating! At the exhibition you can see the first patented bra from 1915, and anti-cellulite knickers and a bust-firming bra. It’s interesting when I’m shopping for something like vintage 50’s prom dresses - I’m attracted to the nipped-in waist, but really am I wearing the right handbags to make this dress fit perfectly? Then the designs are generally altered and manipulated by additional draping. Of course I would like to say the final piece comes to fruition in plenty of time before presenting it on the runway, but i seem to be stitching until 3 am the night before…

Retailing at Saks Fifth Avenue and other upscale stores, the company creates high-end gowns and eveningwear that have been worn by celebrities such as Tina Fey and Salma Hayek. The bankruptcy filing by Mr. Gaskins, who is black, is another blow against the black design community.

“There’s been a lot of attention in the past few years to [having] models of color walk the runways, but behind the scenes, there’s been an equal imbalance in the number of African-American designers,” said Susan Scafidi, intellectual property and fashion law professor at Fordham University School of Law. Losing another African-American designer will only widen the divide.

“Bankruptcy is supposed to allow the individual having the problems to get back on his feet, but I don’t know how that’s going to happen in this climate,” Ms. Scafidi said.

“There’s been a lot of attention in the past few years to [having] models of color walk the runways, but behind the scenes, there’s been an equal imbalance in the number of African-American designers,” said Susan Scafidi, intellectual property and fashion law professor at Fordham University School of Law. Gucci sneakers Panichgul is, at 34, a veteran of the CFDA’s emerging designer category - he was previously a nominee in 2006 and 2007. The department store, which has not had a chief executive since last spring, has suffered layoffs, cutbacks, rumors of halting vendor payments, and a downgrade last month to “CCC” status by credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s. Barney’s owner, Dubai-based Istithmar World Capital, recently gave the upscale store over $25 million to pay off debts.

That means part of his job is “researching” this girl’s lifestyle, says Wang, so don’t be surprised if U2 is blaring from his office computer or he’s hitting hotspots on the Lower East Side. “We’re building a brand. It’s not just about clothes and a product. It’s so competitive! We’re building a lifestyle and I have to give a peek into how this girl lives.”

The label Wang launched in 2005 while still attending Parsons The New School of Design is steadily expanding. There’s been a full womenswear collection since 2007 and come July there’ll be men’s. Wang, a 25-year-old California native, says he’s appreciative of the recognition he’s received. (His runway shows are hot tickets: Sarah Jessica Parker attended the last one.

Under the new self regulation code drawn up in Italy by the government and designers all models in future shows will be “full bodied, healthy and radiant Mediterranean types.”
Models with a body mass index of less than 18 would not be allowed to take part and all must also present a medical certificate confirming they are in good health.
Larger sizes 14 and 16 - would also be introduced into shows and all models under 16 would also be banned.
In a joint statement Italy’s Fashion Council and the government agreed that:”Many women affected by eating disorders had started dieting to attain the figures of catwalk models and cover girls.”
